چکیده

The large-scale Galactic interstellar radiation field (ISRF) is the result of stellar emission and dust re-processing of starlight. Where the energy density of the ISRF is high (e.g., the Galactic Centre), the dominant γ-ray emission in individual supernova remnants (SNRs), such as G0.9+0.1, may come from inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the ISRF. Several models of the ISRF exist. The most recent one, which has been calculated by us, predicts a significantly higher ISRF than the wellused model of Mathis, Mezger, and Panagia [1]. However, comparison with data is limited to local observations. Based on our current estimate of the ISRF we predict the gamma-ray emission in the SNRs G0.9+0.1 and RXJ1713, and pair-production absorption features above 20 TeV in the spectra of G0.9+0.1, J1713-381, and J1634-472. We discuss how GLAST, along with current and future very high energy instruments, may be able to provide upper bounds on the large-scale ISRF.

Inverse Compton Emission from Galactic Supernova Remnants: Effect of the Interstellar Radiation Field

The evidence for particle acceleration in supernova shells comes from electrons whose synchrotron emission is observed in radio and X-rays. Recent observations by the HESS instrument reveal that supernova remnants also emit TeV g-rays, long-awaited experimental evidence that supernova remnants can accelerate cosmic rays up to the “knee” energies. Still, uncertainty exists whether these g-rays a...

HIGH ENERGY GAMMA RAYS Mathieu de Naurois

The Very High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (VHE) is a rapidly evolving branch of modern astronomy, which covers the range from about 50 GeV to several tens of TeV from the ground. In the past years, the second generation instruments firmly established a growing and varied list of sources including plerions, supernova remnants and active galactic nuclei, and started to study some fundamental quest...

Searching for galactic cosmic ray pevatrons with multi–TeV gamma rays and neutrinos

The recent HESS detections of supernova remnant shells in TeV γ-rays confirm the theoretical predictions that supernova remnants can operate as powerful cosmic ray accelerators. If these objects are responsible for the bulk of galactic cosmic rays, then they should accelerate protons and nuclei to 10eV and beyond, i.e. act as cosmic PeVatrons. The model of diffusive shock acceleration allows, u...

Neutrinos from Cosmic Ray Accelerators in the Cygnus Region of the Galaxy∗

While supernova remnants have been identified as the most likely sources of the galactic cosmic rays, no conclusive observational evidence for this association exists. We show here that IceCube has the possibility of producing incontrovertible evidence by detecting neutrinos produced by the cosmic ray beam interacting with the hydrogen in the vicinity of the supernova shock expanding into the i...

Attenuation of Vhe Gamma Rays by the Milky Way Interstellar Radiation Field

The attenuation of very high energy γ-rays by pair production on the Galactic interstellar radiation field has long been thought of as negligible. However, a new calculation of the interstellar radiation field consistent with multi-wavelength observations by DIRBE and FIRAS indicates that the Galactic interstellar radiation field is intense. We have made a calculation of the attenuation of very...
